On Premise Backup

On premise back up is when your data is backed up to a local drive within your home or business premises. This comprises of a software solution installed on a local system which carries out backup tasks to a shared folder on a storage server, external USB Hard drive, backup tapes or a nas storage device connected to the network. These devices can manually or automatically back up your data and are stored on your premises.  You can use a combination of devices to have redundancy and by using a USB drive the data can be moved to an offsite location, in case of fire or floods etc.

Cloud Backup

Cloud or online backup services have you install a piece of software on your PC that scans your storage for files worthy of backup, encrypt them for security, and send them up to the cloud. Once your files are stored on those cloud servers, they’re accessible for you to restore to any PC, should a file go missing. In many cases, the service lets you access your files from Web browsers and mobile devices. The cloud is the word used when describing huge data centres with thousands of servers that are connected to the internet with extremely fast connections. These data centres are highly secure and spread around the world.  When using a cloud solution, you buy or rent a small part of the storage on one of the servers within the data centre.

Hybrid Backup

Having a hybrid backup strategy is using a combination of cloud and on-premise backups. When your data is backed up on premise a copy of the data is also sent to the cloud, you can select all or some of the data to be transferred to the cloud. Using this strategy gives you a second line of protection from natural disasters. Hybrid solutions can also enable faster recovery times should the worst happen.
